Brian Schweitzer has declared a state of emergency to deal with the state's housing crisis, which has left thousands of people without a place to live, the Missoulian reports.
According to the AP, more than 8,500 people are homeless in the state.
And of those, about 4,000 are in Lewis and Clark County, which includes the city of Helena.
That's one of the top five counties in the country with the highest rental rates, the Missoulian reports.
And that's not all.
The state needs 18,000 more housing units, according to the Missoulian.
And that's not even counting the thousands of people who get assistance through the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development's Section 8 voucher program.
According to the AP, the voucher program provides up to vouchers for up to 30% of a household's rent.
But 64% of those vouchers go unused in Lewis and Clark County, the Missoulian reports.
And that's not even counting people who get assistance through the federal Department of Veterans Affairs' Section 8 voucher program, which provides up to 30% of a household's rent.
And that's not even counting people who get assistance through the state's Low Interest Multifamily Coal Trust Loan Program
