"I grew up in a community where violence was naturally a part of the community, unfortunately," San Francisco Mayor London Breed tells Jewish Insider.
"And in some instances, I did live in fear, because I was worried that somebody I cared about was going to get shot and killed."
But the Democratic mayor, who grew up in public housing, says she doesn't feel the same way about the current situation in Israel, where Palestinian militants have fired dozens of rockets into the country.
"Part of it is the attitude [that], 'We're not going to live in fear,'" Breed says.
"And I feel the same way."
She's currently in Israel on a trip with the Jewish Community Relations Council Bay Area, where she'll meet with officials from the Israeli NGO Gesher, as well as the American Jewish community in New York and Washington, DC, to discuss issues related to Russian-speaking Jews in Israel, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
