Nearly $70,000 in grants has been awarded to groups in southern Berrien County and Cass County in Michigan.
The Michigan Gateway Community Foundation announced the recipients this week, WWMT reports.
Among the recipients are the Salvation Army, Buchanan Community Schools, the Buchanan District Library, tutoring programs, and the Cass County Backpack Spectacular.
The foundation was started by executives from Clark Corp.
in Buchanan in the 1990s, according to WWMT.
The Buchanan Promise was a gift from the late Walter Schirmer Jr., who provided a $15,000 scholarship for every Buchanan student.
"A lot of people know us from the Buchanan Promise, which was a gift from the late Walter Schirmer Jr., which provides a $15,000 scholarship for every Buchanan student," foundation CEO Michael Rowland says.
"So, that's been a huge part of what we do, that educational piece."
