"Too many families worry that a little more income will make them lose their affordable housing or public benefits," Jill Bauman, CEO of Imagine LA, says in a press release.

"Clear information is impossible to come by."

That's why the nonprofit has received a $1 million grant from the Conrad N.

Hilton Foundation to create the Social Benefit Navigator, an online tool that will help people navigate the public benefits system and predict how changes in income will affect those benefits, the Los Angeles Times reports.

"The lack of transparency and coordination between benefit sources is a big barrier," Bauman says.

"The SBN will answer questions like, 'If I take this job, will I lose my monthly food benefit?' and keep families on track to achieving stability and economic mobility."

The tool, which will be beta-tested over the next two years with LA-area agency partners, will help families avoid "nightmare scenarios where a pay raise leads to a loss of benefits equal to or greater than the raise'benefits cliffs'are frequent," the press release says.
