"We were so happy about it."

That's how one resident of Canada's Whistler mountain resort describes her feelings after a fire destroyed her new home in 2015, leaving her and her boyfriend without a place to live.

The couple had just moved into a two-bedroom unit at Alpine House, a 21-unit condo complex in the resort town, in the fall of 2015, when the fire broke out, the Vancouver Sun reports.

Up to 80 residents were displaced, and the community came together to help them find new housing, the director of the Whistler Community Services Society tells the Pique newspaper.

The Community Foundation of Whistler, which is celebrating 25 years in 2024, stepped in by setting up an emergency fund.

Since then, it's given more than $4.33 million to community organizations and non-profits, per Pique.

"When you see that $4.3 million [in grants], that is all a result of past donations," the foundation's CEO tells the Sun.

"That is growing year after year, and only has more room to grow as we build out those endowment funds."
