Reflections on Fifty Years, by Dee Boyle-Clapp : Arts Extension Service

When Stan Rosenberg founded the Arts Extension Service at the University of Massachusetts in 1960, he envisioned it as a way to "develop and nurture arts and culture in communities and community development through the arts," the school says in a press release.

Today, it's "filled with remarkable accomplishments and many 'firsts' for the arts and arts management fields."

Among those firsts: Rosenberg was the first person in the US to earn a master's degree in arts management, and he was the first person in the world to receive a doctorate in arts management.

Now, thanks to a $1 million grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Rosenberg will be able to continue his work as the director of the service, which offers a master's in arts management, a PhD in arts management, and an associate's in arts management, the Boston Globe reports.

The grant, which Rosenberg received last month, will allow the service to expand its internship program for artists and arts organizations, as well as offer a new program for students to start their own arts businesses, the press release notes.
