State Grant Funds Area Nonprofits

"We are proud of the progress made and will continue to work diligently to address homelessness in our city."

That's the pronouncement of Livermore, Calif., city manager Marianna Marysheva, after the city received $439,426 from a $650 million state grant to help the area's homeless population, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

The money was awarded through the state's Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention (HHAP) program, which aims to end homelessness in one year.

The city worked with Open Heart Kitchen, Tri-Valley Haven, and CityServe of the Tri-Valley to distribute the funds, which covered administration expenses, shelter coordination, resource operations, and shower and laundry services, Open Heart Kitchen executive director John Bost tells the Mercury News.

Tri-Valley Haven, which received $208,937, provided shelter for survivors of domestic violence and their children, while CityServe of the Tri-Valley supported 12 Housing and Urban Development homeless households.

"These funds were crucial for Open Heart Refuge to quickly pivot from providing overnight shelter only five days a week to now seven days a week," Bost says.
