"Electrifying our buildings presents an important opportunity to drive down energy costs for our residents."
That's the message from Massachusetts Gov.
Charlie Baker, who on Tuesday announced the first recipients of a $50 million grant program designed to make affordable housing in the state more energy efficient and less reliant on fossil fuels, the Boston Globe reports.
Some $27 million will go toward "decarbonization retrofits" at affordable housing developments, while another $23 million is available for low- and moderate-income residential buildings.
"This grant program will lower monthly energy bills and maintain affordable housing for families across Massachusetts," Baker says.
"We will continue to pursue smart, cost-effective strategies that make our state more affordable, while keeping us on the cutting edge of climate innovation."
The grants, which can cover clean energy-minded retrofits and efficiency upgrades in buildings, were announced in February.
