A Canadian company is building what it says will be the world's first mass-timber production facility that will create more than 70 jobs, the CBC reports.
According to the Globe and Mail, Massive Canada's new facility in Williams Lake, British Columbia, will produce up to a million square feet of structural mass-timber products per year, including roofs, walls, and floors for homes and commercial buildings.
It's expected to cost about $50 million to build.
The mass-timber industry has been struggling in recent years, the CBC reports.
According to the company, mass-timber products are more affordable than other building materials, last longer, and are greener.
The new facility will be the first mass-timber production facility of its kind in the world.
The government of British Columbia is providing $10 million for the project.
"We manufacture buildings to help B.C.
achieve their affordable housing and climate goals," Gaetan Royer, CEO of Massive Canada, says in a statement.
